History
Rifle is a Western-Slope town with a small town atmosphere and a tight local community. The downtown section of Rifle has antique shops, dining, and history museums. The area surrounding Rifle (the Colorado RIver goes though) is rich with wildlife and gold medal streams that provide some of the best elk hunting and fly fishing in Colorado. Enjoy nature at Rifle Gap State Park and Rifle Falls State Park. Legend says the town got it's name from a surveyor that left his rifle leaning against a tree. On his map he drew a rifle leaning on a tree, then on his map marked the spot with the word "Rifle". Since there were no maps of the area, it was to be the name of the town.
